Get an Armenian Visa for a Wine Tour in the Home of the World’s Oldest Winery

According to the BBC, the world's oldest winery was recently discovered in a cave in Armenia. The primitive winery consists of a shallow basin used as a wine press, along with a deep stone vat for fermentation. Dried grape vines and the remains of pressed grapes were also found on site, leaving little doubt as to the purpose of the basin and the vat. The wine press is 6,000 years old. Morbidly enough, it was located in the center of a graveyard. Archaeologists believe that the wine it produced was used in funeral ceremonies.

This week's featured UNESCO World Heritage Site is a charming old monastery carved into the side of a mountain in Armenia. The monastery of Geghard dates back to the 4th century AD, when it was founded by Gregory the Illuminator, the man responsible for Armenia's adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD.
However, most of the buildings in the monastery were built later. The main chapel, for example, was constructed in 1215 AD. The original 4th century construction consisted of rooms and chambers carved out of a cave that surrounded a sacred spring. Although the original cave cell housing the spring is still there, little else is left of the original monastery, as it was all destroyed by earthquakes or Arab invaders.

Armenia is an ancient country. The capital city, Yerevan, dates back to 78BC, making it 29 years older than Rome! Today, however, Yerevan is a thriving, modern city. Now that Armenia is on the cusp of settling its border dispute with Azerbaijan and is working toward more normal relationships with Turkey, the country is becoming more attractive to tourists.
In fact, according to The Independent, the number of tourists visiting Armenia from January to September of this year rose 5 percent to 422,500 visitors.
